![]() The Georgics (On Land Cultivation) is a didactic poem written at the behest of Maecenas who gathered about him a cluster of writers and tried to harness their talents for the benefit of Octavian. ![]() In the literary tradition of Europe, it was Vergil, not Theocritus, who invented pastoral poetry. In the Eclogues, the influence of Theocritus is clear, but it was Vergil who invented Arcadia-not the Arcadia in central Greece but an imaginary Arcadia where shepherds and cowherds sang and loved and lived a life far removed from the turmoil of the city. But if so, the child whose birth Vergil foretold was never born. ![]() he was still married to his second wife Scribonia by whom he had his only child, a daughter Julia. It could be a child expected by Octavian when Eclogue Four was written in 40 b.c.e. The identity of this child has been much disputed, and later Christian commentators interpreted the poem as a prophecy of Christ's birth. The fourth poem, the so-called "Messianic" Eclogue hails the expected birth of a child who will usher in a new age. ![]() There are problems with this interpretation, and it is more probable that Vergil's intent in both his first and ninth Eclogues was to make known the disruption and injustice caused by the land expropriations. Vergil's family estate was expropriated and the first Eclogue tells how a freedman, Tityrus, had his little farm restored to him. There are ten of them, and two-the first and the ninth-have been thought to be autobiographic, for they deal with the land confiscations after the Battle of Philippi, when Octavian expropriated land in the region of Cremona and Mantua to settle demobilized soldiers. Some scholars accept the Culex as Vergilian, but the earliest works that are certainly written by him are his Bucolics (Poems of the Countryside), otherwise known as his Eclogues (Select Poems). The poem describes how a shepherd is wakened from a nap by a mosquito, which he kills only to discover that a venomous snake is about to strike him the mosquito had sacrificed its life to warn him in time. Vergil's Eclogues.Ī group of minor poems have survived which have been considered Vergil's early works, and one of them, the Culex ( The Gnat) is an epyllion worthy of Vergil. The reasons for his exile are obscure, but one of them may have been a playful poem he wrote titled The Art of Love which is a witty poetic instruction manual on how to seduce women. Augustus' successor, Tiberius, did not recall him and he died there. When Ovid was about fifty years old, Augustus exiled him to Tomis on the Black Sea in modern Rumania. Ovid was born the year after Julius Caesar was murdered and never knew the free-wheeling days of the republic when writers could write what they pleased, but he learned that an author under the principate-as Augustus' regime was called-failed at his peril to respect certain limits to his freedom. Vergil, the greatest of the Augustan writers, had no hankering for the old Roman republic, having seen first-hand how it misruled the provinces, for he was born in one. The poet Tibullus personally had no taste for war, as he tells us in two poems which celebrate the victories of his patron Messala, and Propertius preferred to write about the love of his life whom he called Cynthia-her real name was Hostia and she was a beautiful courtesan-but since he belonged to the circle of writers who were supported by Augustus' unofficial minister of propaganda, Maecenas, he was called upon to eulogize Augustus' exploits and excused himself as gracefully as he could. He returned to Italy after the defeat of Brutus and Cassius at Philippi in 42 b.c.e., and made his peace with the new regime. The poet Horace fought as a staff officer (tribune) in the army of Brutus and Cassius, but he was no diehard defender of the Roman republic. and ended when Caesar's heir, Octavian, defeated Mark Antony and Cleopatra at the Battle of Actium in 31 b.c.e.-ended the era of literature of the late republic and started the Augustan Age. Paikea does not want to be bound by these tales on the contrary, she wants them to set her free to write her own stories. She does not want to be cast-off to one side simply because of what was written before, the stories that have ignited her passion for her ancestors is not the law to her, it is an inspiration. Paikea wants nothing more than to be accepted, by her father, by her grandfather, and by her culture as a whole. Her grace and spirituality belie her young age. She is clearly every bit as smart as she is strong. Paikea’s journey is a perfect example of this. ![]() It shows us that even is these marginalized cultures that there is an, even more, marginalize people within its own ranks. The reaction to Paikea’s birth is, unfortunately, a sad indictment of male-dominated tribal communities. He doesn’t see his granddaughter as the gift she is instead, he views her as a representation of not just his son’s failings but his own failings also. Koro sees this as the breaking of a chain that goes as far back as the original whale riders. The future I speak of is the little girl of the story Paikea, who has been scorned from birth for nothing more than the fact that she was not born a boy. It too will soon be the past and has to be allowed its opportunity to take its rightful place in the lineage of all the other tales of their people. The future needs a little wiggle room if it too is to become part of the fabric of a people. What I mean by that is if you hold too tightly on what came before then you might not be willing to loosen your grip to make room for what is yet to come. Koro (Rawiri Paratene) teaching tribal rituals to the young MaoriĮven though Koro’s role in the community is without question and the importance of his teachings is so necessary for the young to remember their roots, some negatives come from holding onto a doctrine from another time. Koro is so important to his people it is the elders like him that will keep the traditions and customs alive. It is this dedication that fuels him, and it has made it his life’s work to pass on the knowledge to the next generation. Koro is a traditionalist his dedication to maintaining the cultural heritage of his people is his defining quality. ![]() ![]() His mission is to find the next Chieftan, to rekindle that warrior spirit in the youth of their people. Koro, the leader of the clan longs for the days of old-he wants nothing more than to bring some pride back into their village. ![]() The elders like Koro (Rawiri Paratene) wanted to feel one with nature again just like their forefathers who braved the turbulent seas to make their way to their homeland. They long for times gone by, yearning so much to be like the heroes from their stories. This is the reason for the backward thinking of the elders of the Maori people in this little town. The way Whale Rider interweaves the epic tales of the character’s ancestors with the humble, almost run-down nature of their current environment is excellently done. Whale Rider is just a beautifully told, intimate story about family, legacy, and the aforementioned little girl who wants nothing more than to please her grandfather and continue the family line of Chieftans that she derives from. There are so many elements of the tale of a little girl trying to find her place in the world that I had forgotten about. It had been a long time since I had last watched Whale Rider, the incredible drama from New Zealand that is based on the Witi Ihimaera’s novel of the same name. ![]() Manners and Mutiny forms a fitting conclusion to this eminently enjoyable series. Even though monitored time is not indicative of the annual level of performance of hosted websites, it clearly is a good start. During more than a month of constant monitoring there were two cases of downtime, with one lasting 5 and another 14 minutes, which resulted in 99.95% of uptime. After putting this to the test (kindly provided by UptimeRobot) we got rather good results, especially considering we didn’t have too high expectations. ![]() However, those who have an eye for detail and patience to read through Terms of Service will notice a promise that Strato’s servers should be available 99% of the time on an annual basis. It came as no surprise that GTmetrix finally graded the website's overall speed performance with a firm B (92%).Īt first glance it seems that Strato provides no uptime guarantee. Another line of evidence is that humans with Down syndrome develop similar pathological changes as a result of the triplication of chromosome 21, on which the amyloid precursor protein (APP) is encoded. These animal models recapitulate some but not all the typical histologic alterations such as amyloidosis, synapse and neuron loss, tau hyperphosphorylation and inflammation. This pathogenic mechanism, which is essentially covered by the amyloid cascade hypothesis, is founded on numerous animal models which are genetically engineered to develop amyloid plaques. ![]() In turn, amyloid toxicity, which may be mediated by oligomeric intermediates and/or fibrillar amyloid beta, is thought to cause tau hyperphosphorylation and inflammatory changes as endogenous reactions to the presence of noxic stimuli. These alterations are thought to be caused by an imbalance of amyloid beta production and its removal from the brain, causing the aggregation of characteristic fibrillar amyloid deposits. Quantification of these neuropathological alterations during autopsy is used today to assess whether an individual suffered from the disease now bearing Alzheimer’s name and how far the disease has progressed. He noticed distinct histological alterations in the cortex, such as fibrillary tangles inside neurons and extracellular deposits of a substance unknown to him, which has later been identified as amyloid beta. In 1906, Alois Alzheimer examined the brain of a 54-year-old woman, who had died after a three-year course of severe cognitive impairment and memory loss. Here, we critically review the most intensely studied mechanisms of spine loss in Alzheimer’s disease as well as the possible pitfalls inherent in the animal models of such a complex neurodegenerative disorder. However, to date none of these mechanisms have been translated into successful therapeutic approaches for the human disease. Lastly, genetic and therapeutic interventions employed to model the disease and elucidate its pathogenetic mechanisms in experimental animals may cause alterations of dendritic spines on their own. Furthermore, tau hyperphosphorylation and microglia activation, which are thought to be consequences of amyloidosis in Alzheimer’s disease, may also contribute to spine loss. For instance, amyloid beta fibrils, diffusible oligomers or the intracellular accumulation of amyloid beta have been found to alter the function and structure of dendritic spines by distinct mechanisms. To date, a large number of different mechanisms have been proposed to cause dendritic spine dysfunction and loss in Alzheimer’s disease. ![]() Dendritic spines are readily accessible for both in vitro and in vivo experiments and have, therefore, been studied in great detail in Alzheimer’s disease mouse models. Dendritic spines are specialized structures on neuronal processes, on which excitatory synaptic contacts take place and the loss of dendritic spines directly correlates with the loss of synaptic function. Synaptic failure is an immediate cause of cognitive decline and memory dysfunction in Alzheimer’s disease. If you were using Windows 7 you could either disable the feature manually or switch to the Classic theme (which disables pretty much every window effect). Unfortunately since you're using Windows 8.1, I've heard that they made disabling Desktop Composition very difficult. While disabling Desktop Composition will bring back a lot of screen tearing if your game is running below your monitor's refresh rate, the microstuttering should be gone. I also noticed that along with stuttering, this seems to cause some input lag as well. Even if vsync is disabled in either one of Dolphin's backend settings, you'll notice that screen tearing is still eliminated. Desktop Composition applies its own vsync to eliminate screen tearing on your windows. I've had this problem for a long time, and I believe part of the issue is caused by the Desktop Windows Manager (more specifically, Desktop Composition with the Aero theme). If it's what I'm thinking of, the shader cache causes more of a 'hitch' in the frame that results in a momentary pause during game play. The 'microstuttering' caused by the Shader Cache I believe causes the frame rate counter to change which isn't what the OP is saying. When this occurs, there is definitely a noticeable stuttering even though the frame rate counter never budges. The microstuttering is a lot more noticeable on both backends if the native framerate of the game is 30. For me, it occurs more frequently with the OpenGL backend than the D3D one, and it occurs less frequently on the D3D backend when the game is already running at a consistent framerate of 60 (my monitor's refresh rate). I run all my games in fullscreen with the frame rate counter enabled and noticed periodic frame lagging in an interval much like the OP describes. Not sure, but I think he meant to say a week old developer version? I'm forced to use OGL, but I get lines around text in game, similar to what happens in pcsx2 when upscaling and also the stuttering.Īlso when using d3d in Castlevania Rebirth I get graphical glitches in the intro when it's showing the historical pictures of the Castlevania games, and I tried Contra Rebirth this morning and the game hangs after pressing start. Open GL not so much.Īlso I noticed d3d does not play well with any of the wii ware titles I have tried. I had DID have this problem in d3d but setting vsync to application controlled in Nvidia cp and enabling it in the emu fixed it. ![]() I know it's not my specs, and I do not have this problem in d3d.anymore. The fps counter stays at 60 but the game will stutter for about 2 seconds every 10 seconds. It is an excellent emulator, but whenever I use OpenGL as my back end, I get microstuttering. "This seems like a solid piece of research-if I'd found it, I'd have given it a new name as well," noted Timothy Rowe, director of the Vertebrate Paleontology Laboratory at the University of Texas, Austin. It's even possible the new fossil platypus was part of a now-extinct side branch of the main platypus lineage. ![]() ( Watch a video about platypus evolution.) Later in life, an adult chews its soft prey using horny pads in its mouth. Today's platypus, for example, only has teeth as a youngster. The fact that the ancient species had such a big tooth was surprising, since older platypus fossils have suggested they evolved smaller and fewer teeth over time. Such a hearty diet may have also been why the newfound platypus was so big, she added. That's because its larger size and possibly more carnivorous teeth suggest it had a different diet from other platypuses-which mostly eat soft invertebrates-possibly taking on bigger prey such as frogs, Pian said. tharalkooschild, researchers know that "the evolution of the platypus is potentially more complicated than we thought," said Pian, whose study was published in the November issue of the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology. ![]() Part of the problem is that most of the time, only the teeth with their hardy enamel survive the wear and tear of time. Only four extinct platypus species have been discovered, each in different periods of time, leading scientists to believe that either there are huge gaps in the fossil record or the platypus family tree is simply not very diverse. (See "Platypus Genome Reveals Secrets of Mammal Evolution.") The ancient platypus belongs to a tiny group of egg-laying mammals called monotremes, of which only three modern species remain: the platypus and two species of echidna, all of which are found in Australia and New Guinea. The team had just shaken up platypus evolution. It was bigger than any platypus known before. To estimate the size of the animal the tooth came from, Pian and colleagues compared the tooth with other platypus teeth and made a rough extrapolation of the size of the new species. But it also had bumps and ridges never before seen in the group. When she showed it to study co-author Mike Archer, he immediately agreed it was new.įor instance, the tooth clearly had the unique shape known to belong only to platypus teeth. After closer study, "I said, 'Wait a second, not only is it quite big, it's quite different as well,'" Pian remembers. ![]() One tooth struck her as odd: It was bigger than any known platypus tooth. student at Columbia University in New York City, pulled them out in 2012 while studying at Australia's University of New South Wales. The limestone fossils were stowed in a cupboard and forgotten until study leader Rebecca Pian, a Ph.D. Scientists fleshed out the animal based on a single tooth found several years ago in limestone collected from the fossil-rich Riversleigh World Heritage Area of northwest Queensland (map). That's a much bigger critter than a modern-day platypus, which at 15 inches (38 centimeters) long is about the size of a small domestic cat. What's cooler than a venomous, duck-billed mammal that lays eggs? A giant one-and that's just what researchers have found.Ī newly discovered species of three-foot-long (one-meter-long) platypus, dubbed Obdurodon tharalkooschild, swam through freshwater pools in Australian forests about 5 to 15 million years ago, according to a new study. |
